Anti-Wrinkle Treatments

Anti-wrinkle treatments are often referred to by the term Botox®. Botulinum toxin has numerous uses, including:

– relaxing certain muscles of the face to reduce the appearance of dynamic lines and wrinkles
– treating a gummy smile
jawline slimming
– treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
– reducing headaches

There are different names for the anti-wrinkle treatments we tend to call ‘Botox®’. They all contain the neurotoxin, botulinum toxin, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

During a Botox® or anti-wrinkle injection treatment, botulinum toxin is safely injected into specific muscles, in extremely small therapeutic quantities.

It works by inhibiting signals from the nerve cells reaching muscles, therefore paralysing them. It does this by preventing the release of a chemical transmitter called acetylcholine from nerve endings onto muscle cells, reducing the contraction of these muscles.

The muscle becomes temporarily paralysed and remains relaxed until the toxin has been broken down by your body. This reduces the movement of the skin above the treated muscle, causing a reduction in the formation and appearance of wrinkles.

“Baby Botox” or micorbotox is often used to partially paralyse the specific facial muscles, allowing for some movement, while reducing or even preventing the formation of deep, static lines and thus having a more natural result.

The effects of Botox last between 3-6 months. How often you need anti-wrinkle injections can depend on the dose administered but more often it’s about individual responses to treatment and the rate at which your body breaks down the toxin. Repeat treatments are required to maintain the desired effect of any anti-wrinkle injections.

What happens at my appointment?

Step One – Consultation and Consent

Botox® is a prescription-only medicine. It is a legal requirement that the consultation is performed by a prescribing practitioner and you should confirm this with them.

On arrival at the clinic, Dr Wafaa will complete a detailed personal details and medical history form with you.

She will discuss your medical history and highlight the realistic, expected result of the treatment.

She will also describe any potential side effects and ask whether you understand the summary of the treatment you are about to receive. This process should take as long as you need and allow you to weigh up the benefits against the risks.

You will sign and date your completed forms and a consent form.

Step Two –  Treatment

Your anti-wrinkle treatment will take around 15 minutes.

the area to be treated will be cleansed with an antibacterial/alcohol wipe. You will then be asked to mobilise your face with exaggerated facial expressions, for example, you will frown/squint/raise your eyebrows. This helps them identify the correct muscles to target. ‘before’ photos will be taken at this point.

The toxin will I be injected into multiple sites, depending on the area/s you are having treated.

Step Three – Your Follow-up

This is usually done after 2 weeks but should be sooner if there are any problems. This allows to check that the dose administered was appropriate for the agreed outcome and to adjust if necessary.

Step Four –  Repeat Treatment

Depending on how quickly your body breaks down the toxin, you will require a repeat treatment 12 – 16 weeks after your initial treatment.

Are there any side effects to anti-wrinkle injections?

Most clients find botulinum toxin injections to be relatively painless and straightforward.

Some side effects include:

  • Temporary bleeding/bruising
  • Mild swelling
  • Post-treatment headache
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Drooping eyebrows

More serious side effects can occur for treatment of other areas (e.g. double vision, drooping lip, difficulty swallowing or breathing, change of voice or difficulty pronouncing some words.

This list is not exhaustive and you should consult your practitioner if you are concerned in any way.

DO NOT have botulinum toxin injections if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You also need to let us know if:
  • You have a muscular disease (e.g. Bell’s Palsy)
  • You have any blood or nervous system disorders
  • You are taking any medications which affect blood clotting
  • You are taking any medicines
  • You have any psychological concerns

Will I lack facial expression after treatment?

Dr Wafaa wants her patients to look natural. To do this, she usually injects just enough to weaken and relax the targeted muscles without affecting other muscles. This allows patients to maintain their natural facial expressions.

Will I lose sense of feeling in the injection areas?

No. This treatment does not affect your ability to feel.

When is it safe to have another treatment?

You can have another treatment when excessive sweating or lines and wrinkles return. With repeat treatment for lines and wrinkles, the muscle may thin, leading to longer-lasting results.

Is there any downtime after anti-wrinkle treatments?

Most people return to everyday activities immediately.

What must I do after the procedure?

To prevent the injected substance from spreading to areas where you do not want it, you’ll need to take a few precautions:

  • Do not rub or massage the areas where you received the injections.
  • If you apply makeup, take care not to press or rub it in.

Wait two hours before you engage in strenuous physical activity. This includes lifting heavy items, working out, and any other physical activity that raises your heart rate.

Had 1 ml Juvaderm lip filler last week and am over the moon with the results.I’ve had my lips done twice before in different places and found the process extremely painful, however, my experience with Dr Wafaa was almost completely pain-free.She is so knowledgeable and lovely, I cannot recommend her enough!
